Fort
Nottingham derives its name from Nottingham shire's Regiment - the
45th 'Sherwood Foresters', who were stationed there in 1856. This fort
was originally developed when a body of troops manned it to protect settlers
in the foothills of the Drakensberg from Bushman or San cattle raids. Visitors
can visit the Fort Nottingham Museum located 15km South West of Nottingham
Road.
Fort Nottingham offers a nature reserve and museum to visitors
in the Midlands. There are also a number of accommodation establishments
near Fort Nottingham. Fort Nottingham is very quiet and there’s not
much to do except visit the smallest town hall in South Africa – it’s
more like a medium-sized garden shed – and spend an hour or so in
the museum that’s now housed in the old fort.

Fort Nottingham Nature Reserve
The Fort Nottingham Nature Reserve is a small reserve slightly west of the
village of Nottingham
Road, and well worth a visit. The reserve consists of evergreen forest,
grassland and a wetland. It is an easy area in which to walk, and there is
a trail that passes through the grassland, alongside and across the wetland,
and up into the forest. To walk the whole area should not take more than
about two hours. There is a picnic site (no toilets) near the wetland, and
entrance is free. Visitors are invited to go birding, cycling and walking
through the Reserve.
The Bell’s Fort Nottingham Highland and Traditional Games
The Bell’s
Fort Nottingham Highland and Traditional Games to be held
on the grounds of Fort Nottingham (8 km’s from the village) will encompass
festival events, exhibitors, food stalls, highland dancing and athletic games
typically found at a Scottish Gathering such as the Breamar Games will generate
interest and enthusiasm in the Midlands (and beyond) communities of Scottish
ancestry and the general public who enjoy the unique activities found at
Highland Gatherings and in so doing create an event that will be held at
the Fort annually.
