Highmoor - Central Drakensberg
Highmoor is part of the Central Drakensberg with spectacular trout fishing
and the widest panoramic views of the Drakensberg
Highmoor
Nature Reserve nestles in the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park's Central Region
and is bordered by Kamberg and Lotheni to the South and Giants Castle to
the North. Highmoor forms part of the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area and is approximately
15 000 hectares in extent and boasts a huge array of rare, endemic and endangered
species.
Visitors to Highmoor return again and again as there is an incredible sense
of freedom emanating from the wide landscapes of mountains, grasslands and
streams. Highmoor possesses seven tastefully concealed campsites which are
reputed to be both the highest and quaintest campsites in KwaZulu-Natal.
The communal ablution block is equiped with hot and cold showers and flush
toilets. As you can imagine, Highmoor does get cold, very cold, so do come
prepared. Highmoor also offers some of the countries' most exciting fly fishing.
To ensure the sustainability of SA's wildest trout, we implement two control
measures. There are two closed seasons, the 19th of December to the 28th
of February and the 1st of July to the 31st of August. The open fishing seasons
are from the 1st of March to the 30th of June and from the 1st of September
to the 18th of December.
If you are lucky enough to fish the dams you'll see just how well these
closed seasons work. The other control measure is the limitation of anglers
to six at any one time on all three dams. It is recommended that you bring
your float tube as the surrounding terrain is not forgiving on those who
are novices. Our record so far is a trout weighing in at 5.5 kg's which was
caught in 1998 from Salmo Dam. Two caves are available for school groups
and large families (maximum 20 people). The first is Aasvoelkrantz which
is a double story cave that has a permanent supply of water throughout the
year. Aasvoelkrantz is approximately and hour and a half walk from the car
park. Caracal cave overlooks the Ncibidwane river and Giants Castle. This
cave unfortunately only has readily available water in the Summer months.

Highmoor Accommodation
Antbear
Guest House - Indeed a special find. One of those places
you wished you would have stayed longer where the accommodation, view,
location, service and food are just perfect. This is the nearest private
accommodation option near to Giants Castle and also offers one of the
best deals available.
Giants
Castle Camp - The upside is that you are inside Giants Castle
Nature Reserve. The downside is that you are inside Giants Castle Nature
Reserve. You are as close as you can be to starting the hiking trails
but far from any of the other attractions available. And the gate opening
and closing times make early starts and doing anything after sunset an
impossibility. If you do decide to stay here opt for the self catering
option and make sure you bring your own food with you. Giants Castle
camp offers self catering and has a restaurant.
Drakensberg
Luxury cave lodge Experience something different and stay
in the only fully catered luxury cave in the Drakensberg Mountains. And
the luxury cave comes with a few special romantic options like a jacuzzi
spa bath and fireplace both in the bedroom. Whats more it opens onto
a deck with hammock chairs and a panoramic view not often experienced.
Glengarry -
Lovely self catering accommodation in the Kamberg Valley. Situated right
on the Little Mooi River this self catering resort offers trout fishing and
a nine hole golf course. The self catering accommodation is in thatched units.
Cleopatra
Mountain Farm House - Prepare for some of the most fantastic
food you will ever eat. This farm house offers high class fine dining
near to Highmoor Nature Reserve. The rates are a pit on the pricy end
of the scale but hey you only ever live once. Especially if you are one
of those foodie types
Kamberg
Nature Reserve - Simple self catering challets in the Kamberg
Valley. Make sure you bring your own food as there is little available
nearby. Kamberg suffers the same issues as Giants Casle Camp with gate
opening times that make staying here sometimes inconvient. But if all
you want to do is stay in one place I cant imagine many better accommodation
options. |
